Rescue Closed but not over The deadliest disaster in the history of the garment industry happened in Bangladesh on April 24, 2013. Upon my arrival, the scene appeared overwhelming. The entire building was demolished to wreckage. Hundreds of people tried to rescue the remaining survivors. Rescue workers were pulling bodies from the rubble. The death toll stood at more than 1,129 with many more missing. Proceeding the three days on assignment as a photojournalist covering the disaster, I was sent to the island of the Philippines to complete my post graduation. By the fourth day, I felt an urgent need to return to continue documenting the disaster. Although global headlines had shifted to other world events, the situation on the site remained horrific. I returned after eight days. I was amazed at how dedicated the people of Bangladeshi were by continuing the rescue operation. Hundreds of people worked together with members of the Bangladesh Army, fire service and Red Crescent. I felt humbled and stricken at the sight of the workers bodies crushed amid rubble. Using pieces of fabric to drop bodies of the survivors or pull free the bodies of victims from the rubble revealed a lot about the volunteers. Over 290 unclaimed bodies were buried after DNA samples were taken. After nearly three weeks of painstaking search for bodies among the rubble of the worst tragedy in the history of the global garment industry, the Bangladesh army turned control of the site over to the civilian government for cleanup. Though the Bangladesh Army has closed the rescue officially, it’s not ended. Relatives of missing victims continue to look for their loved ones at the collapsed building site. Though they have lost so much, remaining is the hope for any trace of a loved one.

Nobody but the fireflies… Perhaps it is nobody but the fireflies that will light to mourn the victims of the political unrest of Bangladesh. It is expected from nobody to remember the names or the faces of the unfortunate innocents. The country is entitled to practice democracy where the political parties are nothing but violent among each other. Politics has been made synonymous to business here. The forever long last of power among the governments, have drowned all political parties in vein. Power has become money and the source of all troubles. The opposition parties are still on the street to fight for a new election under a caretaker government. They have been continuously calling strikes and blockades throughout the year. Petrol bombs, cocktail and flammable substance are regularly throwing on public buses, trains, other vehicles – innocent people are getting injured or killed on those attacks. The political parties are yet to take any responsibilities whatsoever of the subversive activities against the innocents.

Enforcement-When enforcement officers from the Selayang Municipal Council turned up at her home in Desa Jaya on Friday, her children were already covered in sores from dirty and soiled diapers that looked like they hadn't been changed in days. But for the 33-year-old serial hoarder, known only as Xin, filth is part and parcel of her life. This was not the first time council officers had responded to her neighbours' pleas. In the last 10 years, they had been called in to sort out the mountain of discarded junk she had accumulated. And every time they came, the owner would threaten to harm herself and her children. The last time the team came a few months ago, she flung her two children into a dumpster. This time, however, the council's enforcement officers came well prepared. While one officer entered Xin's house, operation head Siti Fatimah Ibrahim and another officer grabbed her toddlers before she could harm them.Suddenly, Xin flew into a fit of rage and lunged at an enforcement officer. The officer was quick to duck. Xin then stormed out of the house. There she beat her chest with clenched fists and stomped her feet. She shouted and wailed before an officer restrained her by pinning her hands to her back as a precaution. In a previous operation earlier this year, the odd-job worker had also turned hysterical and allegedly threatened to slit her throat with a piece of broken glass.

Taken on 11th March, 2015. Taken at Chitpur in Kolkata, India. The photo depicts how a child, being the same in all aspects , is alone and forgotten by others who might well be his playmates. He intently watches them growing up together, gelling and playing. He may be in some sort of pain not being able to join them. May be, he is struck by some unfortunate disease or may be he is too powerful to play with normal people, so he chooses a ground, higher than everybody, to look and maintain the peace of the world. The child is a representative of loneliness.
Taken on 15th August, 2014. Taken at Kumortuli, the potters' town in India. This photograph is the portrait of a man who is used to do only side jobs at Kumortuli. He is not a potter, he is just a helping hand. Thus, suddenly getting the center stage just leaves him with surprise and eagerness. The expression and the backdrop suggests that the person photographed has been suddenly dropped down at the center stage of life's drama and the person has the least clue of the act. He looks intently inside the darkness of the lens of the shooter to find light, for it is the dark that suddenly gives out the light.

In the past few years, Tidal surge – water levels rising significantly above the tide levels that astronomy predicts - has begun to affect the city as much as twice a day, resulting in frequent flooding of residential and business areas. If things continue to worsen, most area of Chittagong could become completely submerged in the near future. A World Bank study that was released June 19,2013 forecasts a two degrees Celsius rise in the world’s average temperature in the next decades. Considering the present warming trends, the reports warns that even 20 to 30 years from now shifting rain patterns could leave some areas of the country under water and some others without enough water for power generation, irrigation or even drinking. Flood affected areas could increase by as much as 29 percent for a 2.5 degrees Celsius temperature rise in Bangladesh, says the report. If the sea level rises 65 cm in 2080,around 40 percent arable land will be lost in southern Bangladesh, it notes about 20 million people in the coastal areas are affected by salinity in drinking water and rising sea levels. Chittagong is often regarded as the commercial and industrial capital of Bangladesh. Estimated population of the city is more than 6.5 million. The Port of Chittagong is an important driver of the Bangladeshi economy, handling over 90% of the country's international trade. The effects of climate change – rising sea level and sea surface temperature, emission of carbon by first world country, deforestation, global warming – have brought a sudden vulnerability to the lives and livelihoods of people living in Chittagong city and coastal areas of Bangladesh.

“Life is “precious”, it never can evaluate with money, in my past being with the poverty I may not realize this word properly, but the last two years I am feeling it properly to my every single breathing. I got seven hundred thousands taka as a compassion as others, but with this money what am I to do? Till now I didn’t find out my daughter’s body. I am crying in front of every grave, don’t know that grace is my daughter’s, even don’t know she got a place in a grave or not. Many or others identified theirs grave where relatives take a place by a test (DNA), Allah didn’t give me this minimum luck too. She was my single child, my husband leaves me when my daughter was a child and I was living merely holding my daughter. I am living as a dead woman science last two years”, said Rokeya Begum, standing in front of a burnt house next to a burnt garment factory building. Her voice was shaky and eyes were full of tears, when she was talking with me. Two years before in November 24, 2012, a blaze in the factory has killed 112 workers, 17-years-old Hena Akhter, daughter of Rokeya Begum was one’s of them. In that day also innate 112 unbearable, heartbreaking, unacceptable, awful true stories of life. Those stories tell losing husband, or wife, or mother, father, brother, sister, daughter and every single story of life is awful true stories of life as Rokeya Begum. Time and tide wait for none, life is going on. As well as relatives of victims trying to adjust during past two years, many of them go back their village, few of them still jobless but scared of working in any garment, few are starting small business las a tea stall, someone starts working in a garment again and many of them stacked in a room through sickness, but time, tide, life really becomes stacked for the few as a Rokeya, Jobbar, Lota, Mujammel, Jomira and more after that blaze in the Tazrin garment facility. Still almost every day somebody are moving around their former living room next to the Tazrin garment factory building, that was burnt with the factory and memorized their family lives with their loved one.

75 percent of population of Iran are under 35 years old who prevent marriage because of economic and social difficulties. This leads to rising of the age of marriage and other social phenomenas like bachelor living and departure of youngs from their family.Studies show that 7.1 percent of Iranians living alone, most of them in Tehran, capital of Iran. .According to these studies 46% of men and 48% of women have never been married. The supreme leader of Iran is concerned about this matter in the passed years and encouraging people toward marriage and posterity. Bachelor living of girls shows their point of view: modernism and western life style, drifting away from traditional life. They also want to prove that they can live independent without any support from their families, just like boys do. The reasons why young boys and girls prefer a bachelor life could be the hard time they spend with their traditional familis and not having any common point of view with them, job and education.

“I followed the trail out of the room, invigorated by the possibility of reinventing my own body. The meaning was mine, as long as I was with those who had the vision and vocabulary to understand my creation.” Every form of life owes its origin to Mother Nature. It is nature that decides upon the course of a life - who lives, who dies, who becomes a man and who remains unborn. And finally, who defies all of these predetermined categories of life and living and is born into a world of his own – different yet just as normal. We know them as the third sex, or the transgender. It won’t be unusual if the mention of this word causes one’s eyebrows to twitch or the eyes to narrow. For the third sex has always been a subject inviting uneasiness and discord. Despite originating from the same creator as us, they are subject to lifelong rejection and abandonment due to their inability to conform to what has been defined as ‘normal’. But on closer observation one may find that regardless of the bodily differences, the dreams and desires underneath the skin are all the same. Words of spite invoke in them the same despair while a gesture of affection fills them with the same warmth and happiness felt by those who unlike them are ‘unjudged’, ‘undamned’ and ‘unabandoned’. They too have dreams – of living in a world that belongs to them just as much as it belongs to anybody else. They have dreams of making it big in life, of being whoever they want to be, of having a job, a career, to be able to walk on the streets without being looked at with malevolence. This particular body of work seeks to voice the aspirations of a group of transgender in Delhi who since the last two years have been organizing a calendar shoot for themselves as an acknowledgement of their desire to become fashion models and be known in the world of glamour. This year they took this initiative a step forward by bringing in professional models to accompany them in their venture. Surpassing all boundaries of judgement and preconceived notions, it was a delight capturing these people in their effort to tell the world that there’s just so much more to them beyond their ‘odd’ ways of clapping. This work is a humble tribute to those who are caught in a body that’s more of a battlefield. Transcending the limits of shallowness and narrow mindedness, these are people who do not just live or breathe, but like all else, aspire too.

Launderers in Dhaka use water polluted by sewerage and tannery wastage causing health hazards like skin diseases. Almost 80 per cent of the city laundries wash clothes in the befouled water of the river Buriganga and other waterways, according to a source in the business. There is no official information on the number of laundries in the city, but sources say around 25,000 laundries and automatic dry cleaners do not have in house washing plants. Many laundries wash and iron garments in local areas without a license from concerned authorities, said Tanveer Ahmed, a laundry owner from Tejgaon. Launderers do not have an association like in other professions. Therefore there is no exact figure on how many of us belong to the profession, said a worker of Pinman D Paris, the oldest laundry in Dhaka. Pinman was established in 1952 at a time when no automated services were available in the capital. Yet, even if we form one, local laundries cannot be included as they do not conform to any standard, he added. Three laundries -- Bandbox, Top Clean and Ishya operating with foreign assistance, wash, dry and iron clothes by machine. Pioneered by Bandbox in 1989 in automated laundry, the rest followed suit. Top Clean is a joint venture between Bangladesh and Singapore while Bandbox and Ishya are, now, completely run by locals. We do not have a washing plant so we wash clothes ourselves in our own homes with the supply from Wasa (Water and Sewarage Authority) or we hand give them to professional washers (dhopa), said an employee of a Mirpur based laundry. Customers alleged that laundry owners charge almost double the price, although the items are washed in dirty water. Not only clothes, but also household, hospital and hotel linen are washed in these laundries.

Mr. Maria is an old woman who, for over 30 years, lives alone in a small wooden house from Poiana Rusca Mountains in Romania. The walking distance from her house to the nearest village is over one hour. In this image she sits together with her donkey and one of her dogs. The donkey is supposed to help her carry water from a nearby spring, but sometimes refuses to do the job. She also has two cows. Her life is harder in winter because of the heavy snow.
